Hometown Cafe

Hometown Cafe is a really casual, almost 'cafeteria' style sort of restaurant serving Taiwanese Food and bubble tea. Most of the customers who visit this place are Taiwanese. The price of a meal (either noodle or rice dishes) are around $10 or below. The waitress will come to your table to take your order and bring the food out to you. When you have finished your meal, you just walk up to the counter to pay.

Reading the other diner's reviews on Urbanspoon, some people like it, some don't. I think it really depends on what you order and if you are accustomed to the way Taiwanese food tastes. Come on, not everyone likes all cuisines! For myself, I am not a big fan of Thai food in general..... but that doesn't mean it doesn't taste good!

Anyway, back to Taiwanese cuisine.........  I find that a lot of the meals that come with rice (especially all the meat ones) are very 'dry' (ie. little or no sauce). There is the deep fried chicken or deep fried pork with rice, that comes with a bowl of soup and some veggies. There is the three cup chicken and rice (also comes with rice and veggies).  Most Taiwanese meat dishes are 'dry' and doesn't have any sauce, unlike Thai/Indian/Chinese dishes that are saucy and full of flavours.  So when people go to a Taiwanese restaurant for the first time and order a meat with rice dish, it's not what they expect!

I only ever order 2 things at Hometown Cafe whenever I go there, and that is the Braised Beef Noodles or the Braised Tofu & Vegetables Rice. The meals are generous in size and I always have trouble finishing everything! But that night I was extra hungry, so was able to finish the whole bowl!!

Taiwanese Braised Beef Noodles
The soup was a little bit spicy and the beef brisket was soft and tender. There were some spicy pickled veggies, which is typical to be served with this noodle. The noodles were smooth and the soup clinged onto the noodles perfectly!

Braised Tofu & Vegetables Rice
My friends ordered the rice dish to share. As the vegetables were cooked in a nice sauce, this gave the rice on the bottom enough flavour. The tofu was crispy and delicious! Both my friends were happy with this dish.

Hometown Cafe is a good place for a cheap and filling feed. But if you want something that tastes good, remember to order the noodle soups or this tofu/veggie rice!
