Kuan Yin has opened on the Gold Coast for approximately 6 months? (or more). It’s located on Scaborough Street in Southport. Their first store is in China Town, Fortitude Valley. I have been to the store in China Town before for dinner and thought it was quite nice, with large servings.
I visited the Southport
store last Saturday with a couple of girlfriends. Their drinks menu was quite plentiful, but we
decided to share a pot of jasmine green tea. The tea was fragrant and very very
nice! We ordered an entrée to share and a main dish each.
Jasmine green tea - $4.50 for one pot |
Salt n Pepper 'Oysters' - $6.50 |
The entrée we got was ‘pretend’ oysters. It
was basically button mushrooms covered in batter, deep fried and then seasoned
with salt and pepper. This was very tasty and surprisingly did kind of resemble
oysters! (without the fishy taste of course).
For main, I ordered the Mushroom Noodle
Soup. The soup was nice, with thinly sliced carrot, bamboo shoots, wood ear
etc. However, I did not notice many ‘mushrooms’ as such. There was more noodles
than soup, so I thought the size was a bit too small.
Mushroom Noodle Soup - $9.90 |
My vegetarian friend ordered a ‘lunch box’,
which consisted of deep fried (fake) chicken, rice, cooked cabbage, broccoli,
tofu, potato, pickled cabbage/cucumber and a slice of orange.
Fried Chicken Lunch Box - $8.90 |
My non-vegetarian girlfriend only ordered
the panfried dumplings because she had already eaten something at home before
meeting with us. She didn’t want to go to a vegetarian restaurant! Haha But
because it was two against one, she had to oblige!
Panfried dumplings - $6.50 |
Overall, I quite enjoyed my meal there. The
atmosphere and décor of the restaurant is comfortable, simple and clean. The
service was friendly and food was tasty. Most of the serving sizes were
reasonable for the price you pay. They don’t open on Sundays and they close
early (I think around 8pm) from Monday to Saturday. So if you plan to go there
for dinner, go really early!
