Petit Four

A while ago, I saw an online deal for a high tea for two people, costing only $15 on Scoopon! I thought, wow that's pretty good value! I had a look at the location to make sure it's not out in the middle of nowhere. Petit Four is situated in the new Winter Garden in Queen Street Mall, Brisbane City. OK, so the location is convenient enough. Then, I checked out what was included in the deal. You get 2 hot drinks, finger sandwiches, petit fours and macarons. That sounds pretty good to me! So I clicked 'BUY NOW'! The purchase was a bit impulsive, but it was only $15....... so I wasn't too fussed!

THEN, I hopped on to Urbanspoon and read some reviews....... and mostly bad reviews! So I didn't really have high expectations of this place. I knew it wasn't a posh hotel serving high tea. It was more of a coffee shop/cafe sort of atmosphere. But at only $7.50 per person for a hot drink, sandwiches, petit fours and macarons each! That's still a bargain!

I went to Petit Four to use my coupon last Sunday afternoon. There were a few other people seated there when I arrived (I think some of them were using the coupon as well). I handed over my coupon and girl behind the counter explained to me what I could choose from the display cabinet. First of all we choose our hot drinks. Then, to my surprise, we were able to choose a chocolate each (mind you, each chocolate cost $2.90!). Then we moved on to choosing two petit macarons each. And then, we chose a petit four each (there were only two-three varieties to choose from when I was there). But I wanted the Lemon Meringue tart, which was available, so I was happy! The sandwich fingers on offer were chicken, tuna, egg salad and ham/cheese/tomato. I was hoping there would be smoked salmon, but sadly there wasn't.

Petit Macarons & Chocolates
We were able to choose the flavours of the macarons. The green one is pistachio, yellow one is citrus, pink is strawbery, brown is coffee. All the macarons were tasty and delicious! Other flavours were vanilla and chocolate. I think the retail price of each macaron was $2.50.  The red chocolate is called 'Ruby', which is a blood orange truffle. The white one is lavender and coconut flavoured. Both were very smooth and creamy!

Chocolate Tart

Lemon Meringue Tart
I didn't try the chocolate tart, so couldn't comment on the taste. The lemon meringue tart I got was quite nice, although a bit on the sour side. It definitely wasn't sweet! The meringue on top was crunchy on the outside and marshmallowy on the inside. The lemon filling was tangy and sour! But I quite liked it!

Finger Sandwiches
The finger sandwiches were average, nothing overly exciting. It wasn't bad, just OK.

Hazelnut hot chocolate
I ordered the hazelnut hot chocolate (retail price $5.80). It was basically hot milk and pieces of chocolate inside, which melted when I stirred the milk. The flavour was balanced, not too sweet, with a hint of hazelnut. The frothing of the milk could've been done better though. The other hot drink we got was 'Mint hot chocolate'.

Overall, I was quite happy with everything, considering all the negative reviews I had read before going to Petit Four. The only negative comment I have is that I saw the waitress touch the top of the cutlery (spoon/fork), instead of the handle, when placing it onto the saucer/serviette. That is not really hygienic.

Petit Four is ok for a coffee or some macarons/cakes/tarts if you are happy to pay the price. It's in a convenient location, but having said that, there are many other better coffee shops/cake stores within the same area. If you're after high tea, go elsewhere!
