A couple of girlfriends and I decided to
meet up for dinner on a Friday night in Surfers Paradise. We were trying to
decide on where to go and then I suggested ‘Black Coffee Lyrics’. I have read
so much about this place on Urbanspoon and another friend of mine has been
there for breakfast and said that it was really good.
We were planning to have an early dinner
(around 5:30pm~6pm) so we thought it would be OK for us to just turn up without
making a booking.
We arrived that afternoon at 5:30pm and
found out that the restaurant doesn’t actually open til 6pm! So we walked
around a bit, doing some window shopping and then went back at 6pm. We got the
last table that was available because everything else was booked! Lucky for us
we even got a seat! We were seated outside in the hallway/walkway, so I didn’t
really get a good look and feel of the inside décor.
The menu was simple, which a few options
for entrée/tapas (Approx. $14 each), around 4-5 choices for mains (Approx. $28
each), 4-5 choices of pizzas (Don’t remember the price) and 4-5 choices for
dessert (Approx. $12 each). They had a very large menu for drinks which
included ciders, beer, wine and softdrink. I was tempted to try the ciders, but
because I had to drive, I didn’t order it on this occasion.
While we were deciding on what to order, we
saw the waitress bring out a huge pizza to another table. It looked and smelt
awesome!
After examining the menu for about 10
minutes, I decided to order 2 tapas and my two girlfriends ordered a main each.
Crispy Pork Belly with Seared Scallop - $14 |
I got the Crispy Pork Belly with Seared
Scallop served with a seaweed salad with pineapple salsa. Being tapas, it was
entrée sized. The salad consisted of wombok, cabbage and edamame with spicy
seaweed. The pineapple salsa was mixed with some chilli. The pork belly meat was
a bit stringy, but not too dry. The rind was not too crispy (compared to pork
belly I’ve tried elsewhere). The scallop was not overcooked and seared nicely.
The second tapas dish I ordered was the
Quail. I thought this was very well done. The meat was tender and the chef has
actually de-boned the quail, leaving only the drumstick bone on. This was
served with a ginger chutney with dried blueberries/cranberries and some goats
cheese. Very tasty!

My vegetarian girlfriend ordered the
Beetroot Risotto. When her meal arrived, we all thought it looked like raw
minced beef! The colour was so vibrant and looked nothing like risotto at all!
I tried a little bit and absolutely loved the taste! It was light and not
creamy like your usual risotto. There was a distinct beetroot flavour, which
was very nice. However, if you are not a fan of beetroot, then maybe this isn’t
the risotto for you.
Beetroot Risotto - $22 |
My other girlfriend ordered the Duck leg
with red wine jus served on pureed pumpkin with a side of poached pears. I was
originally going to order this main dish, but decided not to because I prefer
duck breast over duck leg. My friend said that the pumpkin puree was really
nice and the red wine jus was also really flavoursome!
Duck Leg - $28 |
Overall, I thought the food was of good
quality for a reasonable price. The portions were OK for a small to average
eater, but for big eaters it might not be enough. The service from the staff
was non-intrusive and friendly. Black Coffee Lyrics is a good place to catch up
with friends over a meal or just to chill with a book and a coffee! They even
have live music on certain nights. Definitely worth checking out!
